Since Essi's involvement in the Lion's Pride program, she has been awarded a full ride scholarship to Grinnell College. She is working towards becoming a counselor and still mentors people to this day.
What opportunities did Lion's Pride bring to you?
One of the things I learned through Lion's Pride is that communication is really essential. Having a relationship with your community members and the people around you actually motivates you and fuels up your confidence and self-esteem. I have realized there are so many people in our community and in our school that you can get to know if you just listen to them.
What did you gain from Lion's Pride?
Lion's Pride connected me to the admission administrator at Grinnell College, and now I'm here on a full ride. That has been an amazing thing. The other is whenever there is an opportunity, I get an email talking about upcoming opportunities. I am constantly being rewarded. Also, you get free sweaters!
How has being involved with Lion’s Pride changed you or the way you think?
Some people just need that little push, and that has taken me to where I am now. I am still a mentor here at Grinnell College, and I’ve realized that not everyone who says they’re strong are. It’s still important to have that support even though you think you don’t need it.
Also, you can be a mentor in many kind of ways. At Grinnell, I am a mentor, but not academically. I am working towards becoming a counselor, so I am able to help people emotionally. Being a friend and lending a listening ear helps people as well.
